On May 7, 1915, the German u-boat-20 fired a single torpedo at the luxury liner RMS “Lusitania.” The ramifications of this attack would be felt around the world, including in North Carolina. Wilmington resident Owen Hill Kenan was onboard, making his way to Deck A when the torpedo hit its target. Following a dramatic series of events, including Kenan getting sucked into the water as the ship sank, Kenan was ultimately rescued. He would be one of only 761 survivors of the original 1,959 men, women, and children who had been onboard. Otway Burns, best known for his privateering during the War of 1812, launched the steam ship “Prometheus” on May 6, 1818. With this launch, Burns successfully laid claim to having the “first steamship built and operated in North Carolina.” Burns built the “Prometheus” at his waterfront lot in Swansboro, NC. The vessel operated a route between what’s now Southport and Wilmington and would notably host passengers such as President James Monroe and Secretary of War John C. Calhoun. Image: Otway Burns.
