On June 24, 1942, a K-3 patrol blimp spotted 27 survivors from a steam merchant ship that had been torpedoed that morning by the German submarine U-404 about 44 nautical miles east of Cape Lookout. The men were picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and taken to Morehead City. Ultimately, U-404 would sink four ships off the coast of Cape Lookout. Fish Friday The Blue marlin is the largest game billfish, commonly measuring up to 11 feet and reaching maximum weights of up to 2,000 pounds. Blue marlin fish are found throughout the western Atlantic, migrating seasonally. The largest blue marlin caught in North Carolina weighed 1,228 pounds and 8 ounces and measured 4.9 feet long (179.5 inches). The record holding fish was caught in 2008 off Oregon Inlet by Trey Irvine. Image: Preserved specimen of a blue marlin that was caught on Oregon Inlet, Hatteras on July 26, 1974. It weighed in at 1,142 pounds, a world record at the time and was measured at 15 feet, 4 inches long. Fish was called "Big Mama." (Image from Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum Collection). Also known as "Freedom Day," Juneteenth is a uniquely American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement that slavery would be abolished in Texas. North Carolina joins in the celebration of this national holiday and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederacy. In 1870 the new “pound net,” used predominantly for river herring, was introduced to the Albermarle Sound area. On June 16, 1893, a local newspaper reported in 1880 117 of these new style nets were in use in North Carolina and by 1890 the number had increased to 950.
