Fish Friday!Southern Spotted Weakfish...Also known as speckled trout, bring devoted anglers out in the fall every year. The fish can be caught off the ocean beach, near jetties, from piers, in the marsh and sound, and coastal rivers.Speckled trout can be found year round in North Carolina's coastal waters but November is typically the peak season for them as they school up this time of year. They're geographic range extends from New York to northern Mexico and they tolerate a wide range of salinity (they are euryhaline!). On November 6, 1908, two men were spotted clinging to a capsized canoe about 1.5 miles from the U.S. Life-Saving Station Fort Macon. On November 5, 1914, warship “USS North Carolina” helped the U.S. Navy’s aviation program launch forward, literally.While off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, “USS North Carolina” participated in experimental work to use catapults on battleships. It was the first warship to launch an aircraft using a catapult while underway. A big thank you to White River Marine Group and Bass Pro Shops for their recent grant of $5,000 in support of Museum Programs. Chuck Mooney, White River brand manager, presented the check to the Museum's Education Curator Ben Wunderly, Public Information Officer Cyndi Brown, and the Friends Director of Development David Daly at the White River New Bern facility (formerly Hatteras Yachts). The three also were treated to a tour of the boatbuilding plant by Mooney's staff and saw firsthand the process of how White River's boats are created from start to finish. A special bonus was getting to see the first ever Hatteras Yacht (built in 1958), "Knit Wits", which is still kept on site. ... See MoreSee Less
