Fish Friday!Menhaden vessel grounds...It was on the first of January in 1948 that the 120 ft menhaden trawler "Charlie Mason", owned by Harvey W. Smith and the Beaufort Fish Meal Company, went aground 1.5 miles SE of Ocracoke Light. Captain Wiley Lewis and all but one of his crew survived. Everyone made it to shore but one man suffered a heart attack after making the swim from the trawler.The vessel was loaded with nearly 300,000 fish in the hold, all of which was thrown overboard in an attempt to lighten the load and float off the bar. Coastal North Carolina’s court archives are littered with complaints and lawsuits over the division of profits from harvesting whales. What sets one 1694 squabble apart from other whale-related complaints is the prominent part that a woman plays. Anne Ros’s woman’s testimony in that complaint underscored the larger role that women had in what is typically thought of as a male-dominated field. It is through her participation that we gain a clearer picture of both the whaling industry in North Carolina and the role coastal women played in that industry. On December 23, 1989, a large storm moved off the North Carolina coast. The early winter event produced wind speeds of 60 mph and waves as high as 34 feet. In these hazardous conditions the tanker Benjamin Isherwood was pushed onto a sandbar off Corolla. Fish Friday!Oyster stew...Will your holiday meal plans include oysters? A popular dish for the season is oyster stew, guaranteed to warm you up on a cold December day!From NC Sea Grant, enjoy this recipe: 1 pint standard oysters, undrained4 tablespoons butter1 quart whole milk1 ½ teaspoons sea salt⅛ teaspoon freshly ground white pepper¹⁄₁₆ teaspoon paprika4 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsleyoyster crackers (optional)In medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add oysters and cook just until edges begin to curl, about 5 minutes. Add milk, salt, pepper and paprika. Cook over medium heat until thoroughly heated and oysters are done, about 8 to 10 minutes. Do not boil. Pour into serving bowls and sprinkle with parsley.
