On December 3, 1944, the “USS Carteret,” an APA-70 attack transport vessel named for the NC county, was commissioned by the United States Navy. Its operations at the invasion of Iwo Kima and Okinawa during World War II earned the ship two Battle Stars. December 1, 1875, was the first lighting of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. The lighthouse was designed to monitor the Outer Banks of North Carolina between Cape Henry, Virginia and Bodie Island, a notoriously dangerous area to sail. At 162 feet tall, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse is taller than the majority of the over 700 lighthouses in America. The lighthouse was modeled after the design of the Cape Lookout lighthouse and is located on land purchased from Edmund C. Lindsey. The decision was made to leave the all-red brick tower unpainted since the remaining similar lighthouses along North Carolina had been painted with distinct patterns in 1873. Happy Thanksgiving! Did you know that Beaufort has its own connection to pilgrims associated with the original Thanksgiving?Nathan Fouller/Fuller (1750-1800) is buried in the old burying ground of Beaufort, North Carolina. Nathan is believed to be a direct descendant of one of the original passengers on the infamous “Mayflower” voyage in 1620. Edward Fuller was a passenger on the historic 1620 voyage.
