Fish Friday!Fishermen on the Banks find wrecked schooner...At sunrise on April 10, 1910, fishermen on Core Banks discovered a wrecked schooner the Thomas G. Smith just off the beach. The vessel stranded 9 miles northeast of the U.S. Life-Saving Service Station Core Bank earlier that day at 2:30 a.m. The men promptly notified the keeper of the station who ordered his crew to action. They landed 7 people from the schooner safely on the beach. The Thomas G. Smith was bound from Philadelphia to Charleston with a cargo of coal worth $2,500. Fish Friday!Norwegian whale ship torpedoed and sunk...On April 7, 1942 the German U-boat 552 sank two vessels off North Carolina. The British motor tanker, British Splendour, and a converted Norwegian whale factory ship, Lancing, were targeted off Diamond Shoals. The British Splendour was hit by one torpedo at 4:17 a.m. Twelve of the fifty three onboard died. The tanker lies 100 ft below the surface about 25 miles SW of Cape Hatteras.The converted whale ship Lancing was torpedoed later that morning at 10:52 a.m. The vessel which was previously used as a factory whale ship that could carry large quantities of whale oil was hauling 8,900 tons of fuel. The casualties resulting from the attack were low, one crew member and one puppy were lost. The other 49 men, the ship's dog and her four surviving puppies, were able to board lifeboats. They were all picked up by the passing American tanker Pan Rhode Island and taken to Norfolk, Virginia along with the survivors of the British Splendour. The Lancing lies in 160 ft of water about 10 miles SSE of Cape Hatteras.The Lancing was conducting whaling operations in the Norwegian sea and adjacent waters up until the war started, it was ordered to the nearest allied or neutral port and converted to assist in the war effort. The vessel was directed to America and used to carry fuel from the Gulf and South America to ports in the North East, where it could be transferred to other vessels and sent across the Atlantic. On this day in 1753 the Philadelphia schooner Susannah, under Captain Robert James, was lost at Old Topsail inlet (now known as Beaufort Inlet). The rigging and sails were salvaged but the cargo of corn and the ship, which had only been built the year before, were a complete loss.The vessel with crew of five was bound from New Bern to South Carolina. It most likely sailed down the Neuse River across the Pamlico Sound, out Ocracoke Inlet, then around Cape Lookout, before running into trouble near Beaufort Inlet.
