On this day in 1904 the American schooner Frank W. McCullough arrived in the hook of Cape Lookout. The vessel had hit a sand bar while off of Bogue Banks and was leaking badly. The keeper and crew of the nearby U.S. Life-Saving Station Cape Lookout went on board and manned the schooners pumps until that night. They came back the next morning and stopped the leak, then pumped the McCullough dry. The schooner was able to sail away on it's own accord.The McCullough would eventually run aground again that same year on December 23rd off of Fire Island, New York. Severe storm conditions destroyed the vessel but fortunately all hands were saved.This portion of a chart from 1900 shows the location of the U.S.L.S.S. Station Cape Lookout. There would eventually be two life-saving stations built on nearby Bogue Banks but they would not be operational until after the fall of 1904. ... See MoreSee Less

Fish Friday!The last whale harvested along the shores of Carolina?...107 years and 1 day ago on March 16, 1916 a 57 ft. right whale was taken in the shallows at Cape Lookout. The single boat involved was led by Charlie and John Rose. The whale produced 38 barrels of oil.Some believe that this was the last whale taken in North Carolina waters by shore based whalers, the dolphin seine net fishery in our state lasted a little while longer. There may have been several reasons whale harvesting along North Carolina came to an end, some theories include; the discovery and refinement of other oil sources, early plastics replaced the demand for baleen, the whale population was decimated from over-harvesting, older whalers aged out while young fishermen were making better money with other opportunities, or the dispersal of residents from Shackleford Banks (the epicenter of shore based whaling in North Carolina) to inside waters. It could have very well been all of these reasons combined.This picture is of a whale boat used by Captain Lewis in the late 1800's. It would have been launched from shore when a whale was sighted in the ocean. The picture was taken in Morehead City sometime before the 1950s. It was donated by Mrs. F.C.
